Goldilocks Method

The Rule of 5

5finger

1.
Open the book to the middle and select a full page of text.
2.
Read the page (aloud if at all possible).
3.
Put one (1) finger up for every word you can not easily prounounce or do not know.
4.
If you can put five (5) fingers up on one page, the book is too difficult to read by yourself.
5.
If you do not get any fingers up, but are reading very slowly and decoding almost every word, you probably will not enjoy the book.

"Take a book and read a page.

Count the words that you can't say.

If your score is five or more,

Save that book for another day."

Goldilocks Method

Do you remember Goldilocks' quest in the fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears to find the porridge, chair, and bed that were "just right"? Selecting a book can sometimes feel the same way. Just as Goldilocks found that some porridges were too hot or too cold and others were just right, beginning readers often have difficulty finding books that are "just right" and not too hard or too easy.
